This helps search engines update their records quickly, so that users will be directed to the correct page when searching for content on a particular website. In addition, it also helps maintain link equity and ranking power from any inbound links pointing to the original URL. By using a 301 redirect, websites can ensure that their visitors are always directed to the right page, as well as ensuring that their SEO efforts are not wasted.
